Community organisations all over Dunedin are working to make life better for the people who call this city home.

Place Based Organisations

    The Valley Project is a community-led development project that builds community connections and promotes the wellbeing of local families and whanau.

    Key mahi:

    • Valley Kai, which provides food boxes for families and people in need, in conjunction with FoodShare Dunedin

    • Annual and regular community events such as Matariki celebrations, CreekFest and community dinners

    • Publishing and distributing the community newspaper, the Valley Voice, to over 3700 homes

    • Providing services and resources for the Valley community, such as the community rooms, cheap copying services and community education opportunities.

    The 'Valley' includes the surrounding suburbs of Dalmore, Normanby, Opoho, Pine Hill, and the Exchange. Their offices and community rooms, at 262 North Rd., are the hub of the Valley Project, right next to North East Valley Normal School, at the top of the school car park.

    The South Dunedin Community Network connects people across the wider South Dunedin area to strengthen communities and help people use their voice to create a vibrant, resilient community and a safe future together.

    The Network creates opportunities for the community to come together and celebrate, participating in the organisation of the South Dunedin Street Festival, the Teddy Bears’ Hospital and smaller events throughout the community.

    The Network works with a diverse range of people at a local, regional and national level and supports the community by providing a way for everyone to connect through membership and recruiting volunteers who form a network and help to connect the community. The network does all of this with a focus on Community led development.

    Brockville Community Connect is bringing the Brockville community together by providing a central meeting space and supporting local programmes and events.

    The hub is available to local residents and groups for a broad variety of activities, including meetings, workshops, courses, and children’s play groups.

    "We are keen to hear from local people who want to use the space, and will be happy to work with them on getting events and courses happening"

    The hub hosts a foodbank run by local volunteers, in association with KiwiHarvest. It is also a base for the organisation that helps to care for the local community garden and orchard.

    Taieri Network is a place-based community group in the Taieri focused on supporting, connecting and coordinating community-led initiatives. We aim to increase connectivity and resilience in the community. Whether you are new to the Taieri or are a long term resident, Taieri Network is here for you. We aim to be a 'one-stop-shop' of all things (services, events, businesses, community groups and activities) in our community.

    If you want to get involved, connect with a service, or have an idea, they are very open to people getting in touch.

Localising Food

    Give to Grow Ōtepoti is a not-for-profit organisation which redistributes surplus gardening tools and resources to people who do not have easy access to gardening gear. They accept (old or new) garden tools and resources that are ready to use or can be easily repaired for use.

    Tools can be dropped off every Wednesday between 3:30pm and 5pm. They also host tool refurbishing working bees every 2nd Saturday of the month between 11am and 2pm.

    Supporting agroecological, community-focused food production in Aotearoa

    Village Agrarians are working for dignified and fulfilling livelihoods on land, for collaborative and equitable food systems, and for acroecological food production.

  • FEED is working to increase the food security and resilience for Dunedin and the wider community by esablishing urban gardens andfarming environments; providing educational oppotunities on the production and use of fresh produce; and to encourage the development of a new generation of farmers.

  • Change of DVGC meeting day from January 2025 onwards

    Due to a clash of activities at the Bowling Stadium, we will be changing our club meeting dates to the 2nd Monday of the month from January 2025, same time.

    The Dunedin Vegetable Growers Club (DVGC) promotes home food growing with talks on relevant topics, a trading table, Q&A session, library, supper, monthly garden visits.

    It meets on 1st Wednesday of each month (except June&July), 7pm, at Dunedin Lawn Bowl Stadium, 38 Tahuna Rd, Dunedin. New members welcome.

    Shetland St. Community Gardens were established in 1996 at Shetland Street, adjacent to the Arai Te Uru Marae by volunteers who wished to share in growing food together according to organic principles. The Arai Te Uru Marae Council generously allowed us to use the structures immediately next door to the garden, which included a couple of hothouses and a wind-protected native plant stand-out area and a shed.

    Regular work sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am till 3pm all year round!

    MENTORS OF LIFE SKILLS - HELPING PEOPLE HELP THEMSELVES

    We provide a caring, confidential and non-judgemental service that aims to share home skills, including cooking, sewing and gardening.

    Located at Araiteuru Marae in Wakari. Pātaka Ora is food, fun, friendship, freebies, real talk, music, connection, education & life enhancement. Shared meals for everyone on Mondays.

    All are welcome and you don’t have to register. Just come along. They have shared meals on Mondays alternating weekly between lunchtime and dinner. Please check their facebook page for up-to-date info.
